Nintendo has finally announced a new Switch model today, sporting an improved 7-inch 720p OLED display. Gamers expecting beefier internal hardware, such as a new Nvidia chip that will output 4k to TV are going to be disappointed.
Additional external upgrades, other than the OLED are a much needed improvements. This OLED model comes with a sturdier stand instead of the flimsy piece-of-shit one that came on the original. Onboard storage has doubled from 32 GB to 64 GB and Nintendo promises improved audio as well. The dock is also getting a small upgrade with a wired ethernet port.
Other than that, this new model is not big departure from the original. It is slightly bigger and heavier, weighing in at 0.71 lbs versus 0.66 lbs. Battery life is unchanged and current Joy-Cons are compatible on the OLED model.
The new Nintendo Switch OLED goes on sale October 8, 2021 for $350. Even though it’s not the upgrade gamers were hoping for, you can bet your ass it’s going to be impossible to find.
