Back in the day, when I had a lot more hair, a lot less belly, and was smashing strange with regularity (LIAR) — I took a crisis communication class on my way to getting a master’s degree.
My professor used to make the class role play press conferences or write press releases in response to theoretical corporate bullshit. A lot of it was cliché, and we would get bonus points when we took things “seriously” or say that we “heard your concerns.”
All you had to say was: “We at [insert company] take [insert bad thing] seriously. For example, “We at Spieler Media take demonic possession seriously.”
Or you can change things up a bit and say that you have heard about your customer’s complaints and will take action. For example, “We have heard that wearing a speedo at the community pool has upset small children. We are evaluating the situation and will take appropriate action.”
Vague responses like this are the best, and if you can do it on a Friday around 5:00 PM, even better.
Shenmue III devs must have taken the same class because they are crisis communicating the shit out of the latest drama to beset this game.
Fans are pissed because Shenmue III is going to launch first on the Epic Games Store for PC this November. Some Kickstarter backers have gone so far as to request refunds.
Developer Ys Net eventually posted a response on their Kickstarter page:
“Hello Everyone,Ys Net via Kickstarter
We want to make sure that the Backers are aware that we are listening to their concerns. We kindly ask all our fans to have some patience, we are currently at E3 demoing the game and need to get back to our respective offices to assess the situation and together find a way forward to justify the trust you placed in us.
Thank you for your patience and support.“
See? They’re listening. Chill fans. Give them some time to get back to work and they will come up with a better excuse. Or not.
Shenmue III release on PS4 and PC November 19.
